Ramshackle Glory – Live the Dream (album review)

Ramshackle Glory is the final band that Pat the Bunny was in/started before he retired in 2016.  Pat seems to write albums that are heavily autobiographical, this one being no exception. Pat the Bunny is one of those artists that I discovered in the last couple of years where from the first album I listened to by him, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains, I thought “HOLY FUCKING CHEDDAR! This kid has a goddamn voice!”  I mean that both literally and lyrically, like if you listen to Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains (link here) his lyrics are deep but his voice is so “ugly beautiful”.  He is also one of the few artist who has made me jealous because when I started doing research into him, I found out the bastard is like MY FUCKING AGE (I turn 30 this year, for the record). Jealous not because of the life he’s lived, honestly I have pity for the unexplainable amounts of pain and drama he must have experienced, but for the depth of his ability as an artist.  Sometimes life is just but it’s usually never fair.

Speaking of just and fair, Ramshackle Glory’s first album deals heavily with ideas of freedom particularly with regard to the things which hold us back such as grief, substance abuse, and political against. This isn’t to say Pat doesn’t have a sense of humour, which can be seen from his track titles “We Are All Compost in Training”, “Vampires are for Poseurs” and “First Song, Part 2” and lyrics like “No one needs to tell me how to get (get get) down // But won’t somebody show me how to get back up? // I thought about killing my landlord, but he was pretty nice// Instead, I paid my rent on time as often as I could” and “Who needs brakes when it’s all down hill from here?”\

Album Summary:

Live the Dream is Ramshackle’s first album is a folk-punk memoir concept album about presumably Pat the Bunny (the lead singer) and some of the friends he mentions throughout the album, specifically Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist.  The half of the album is a sort of descent into what seems to be a deeply low but ultimately growing period in his development as a person and an artist which said growth is gradually built up in the second half of the album. The second half of the album is both rhythmically and lyrically more uplifting and progressing through to the climax song (which is also my favourite song) Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist and the the outro song “First Song, part 2” which can be seen as a “redemption song” opening with “I took the needle out of my arm about a year ago today// ever since then i’ve been taking the needle out of my brain”.  Overall it’s a rough but excellent album well worth listening all the way through for the appreciation of both the self referential and narrative lyrics starting with the lyric from the first song “But nothing’s been quite the same since you shot yourself” which seems to be a reference to Chuck in Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist.

Where Did the Night Fall?

This week I’m looking at the band UNKLE, an UK outfit composed of long time school friends James Lavalle and Tim Goldsworth. Over the course of their 5 album, 25 year career they’ve worked with a whole lot of other guest artists including their producer DJ Shadow, Thom Yorke from Radiohead, Mike D from Beastie Boys, Jason Newstead from Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age, Lupe Fiasco, Oasis, Massive Attack, and Linkin Park.

I originally found Unkle from some housemates I used to live with years ago who played the song “The Answer – on a wire” [instrumental] which really struck a chord with me, one of my favourtie parts of the song is the transition between the two tracks “the answer” and “on a wire” from 4m20s to 4m40s.  After that song, I looked at their “War Stories” album and it was all downhill from there.

I’m a sucker for good album art.

Unkle is celebrating their 25th year anniversary this year and announced their new album “The Road pt 1”.  They did an exhibition called “Daydreaming with UNKLE Presents…THE ROAD” at the Lazarides in SOHO London in celebration of the announcement, but I’m a bit late to the party (the show ran from 20th January to 23rd Feburary) but it sounded like a uniquely Unkle event:

The exhibition is a collaboration between a number of very talented artists, presenting everything from paintings, videos, artefacts and film screenings; this is the definitive UNKLE experience. I look forward to welcoming visitors to daydream with us.”

The Road pt1 Album Art, so fucking good


The new album is slated to release 23rd June or this Friday(1) and they released a single, “Cowboys or Indians” feat YSEE, Mink, and Elliot Power.


In anticipation of the new album(1), I’m sharing with you a review of their newest album, “Where Did the Night Fall” their 5th studio album preceded by (in order): Psyence Fiction, Never Never Land, War Stories, and End Titles…Stories for Film.  They re-released the album in a 2 disk special edition called “Where Did the Night Fall – Another Night Out”:

The first disc will contain the same songs that are on the original album but the second disc contains material from two of UNKLE’s previous EPs, plus a number of exclusive and rare tracks. It was released on 11 April 2011. (Source: “Where Did the Night Fall”, wiki)

I like the overall story of the album and I love the characters introduced in this story type album, like oracles and travelers, road warriors, and lovers. The story feels like getting over a heartache (lost love, lost life, lost someone), the songs bobbing up and down between depression and cynicism before bouncing off bottom and beginning the healing process, as per track 13, before coming back to a stark reality: the return from the journey with track 14 Another Night Out which I think is the strongest ending to the narrative of the album but the track 15 Close Your Eyes does work well as an “aftercare” song after the emotional journey this album amounts to.  

Some really specific notes:

I love Rachel Fannan’s voice(2) with sounds like that growl opening stanza 2 at 30s (follow me down)

-The transition between tracks 5 and 6 is fucking stellar.  It’s easily one of my all time favourite transitions

-I love the sound of track 6 “On a Wire”.  Like not just drum line or the guitar, no. I like all of it. ALL.

-Are you really living

-for some reason a lot of places have entirely different lyrics for track 13, I have included lyrics corresponding to the version of the song here

Summertime Sounds of the Playtime Posse (album review)

Happy Wednesday!

I’m continuing from a Wednesday from a few weeks ago, The Changing Times Are Asking for a Soundtrack, which featured the highlights of Pat the Bunny’s early work with Johnny Hobo and the Freight trains with their album “Love Songs for the Apocalypse” and Wingnut Dishwashers Union “Burn the Earth Leave it Behind”.  The album I’m featuring today is a silly hip-hop side project by Pat the Bunny and friends.

Spit true – I like the punk rock anti-authority carry over of fighting the po po just before paying a library fine so he can read.  The political jab “Fake as Tonkin” is pretty good. Keeps a militaristic notion through the album, sober like a riot cop, mercenaries, watching your six.  I like the reference to MC Esher.    

Gamers – The second song gamers is kind of a proto-nerdcore rap. Strip solitaire?! Sounds awesome, haha.  There are some cool lines in here like “the smooth as gillette” and they scope of games they cover is totally MC Chris territory: go fish, candy land, four square, the ace of spades, civilization I and II, wii, vr, movies home alone peter pan, tamagotchi.  Also like Mc Chris they have a sketch at the end starting at 2.51

Best of All Time Final – I really dig the r&b opening vibe and the self deprecating humour about mc onaning in tracks trope is pretty good. “my rise is mediocral”

100 Trashbags Full of Weed – This is a nice change of pace with a reggae thing and I really like the trumpets.  The drinking “oatmeal from my goblet” reminds me of my flatmate who eats pounds of oatmeal kinda looks like a goblet.  

Bags of Dro mix – I felt like the repetitive beat kinda worked here because of the acoustic guitar, gave it a richer sound to listen to which made start tapping my toes unconsciously.   

The Perfect Recipe Mix – Great parody on the rap charm song with the staying in cooking and drinking wine. However the matzo balls and tiramisu make me think of nerdcore plus space restaurant mention. I like all the food rhymes particularly “I’ll chef you till there’s nothing left girl” and “pardon my french but the dinner was bitchen and she helped clean the kitchen” (I’m in love)

Everything Crash -An end of world rap is a kinda unexpected song. Reminds me of Deltron 3030, kinda reminds me of other nerdcore apocalypse rap rap like mc chris is dead. Common themes of dystopia post-fall society. It has a really nice beat, best one on track maybe because it sounds like it has more layers.

The Same – The false start is silly but the real start is nice. The beat is back to basic but more decoration (like the chimes). Kind of a “recovery”/”taking a holiday” type rhyme talking about memories.  One of the best lines is “I’m higher than a vampire on fire”.   


Overall – For a silly side project with self and genre depreciating humour it’s not too bad.  The beats were okay on most tracks but Everything Crash which had some cool layering going on.  Overall the album is worth a listen and I will be picking out a couple of songs to add to the Pat the Bunny playlist.
